Background
Despite being a dominant presence in both residential climate control and large building systems automation, Honeywell had not made a concerted effort to play in the small to medium commercial building market.
Responsibilities
As a Principal Experience Designer for the Honeywell Building Management System (BMS) business, I was part of a product team that led the discovery, design, and usability testing for Honeywell's first cloud-based BMS software offering.
Actions
I worked with product management, engineering leadership, and program management to scope the project, prioritize epics, and lead the design of the platform with team members in Seattle. I also led field work in the Twin Cities area and voice of customer research remotely. Our design and development work culminated in Honeywell's first responsive web application that enables use on smartphones, and is hosted on the cloud to facilitate software subscriptions and instant updates.
Results
Honeywell's UX investment contributes to revenue of $1-2 million per year, and the installation of LCBS Connect in over 1,000 buildings in North America. The cloud-based software enables service technicians to reduce service times by up to 50% via Internet access and smartphone support, and helps managers of multiple properties efficiently make decisions and benchmark portfolio performance without needing to visit sites.
